Mayor Moonbeam: Yep, We're in the Final Week of the Campaign
Here we are in the final week of the 2011 Vancouver municipal election, and no issue — except for the Occupy Vancouver shenanigans — has found traction with Vancouver voters. With real issues — like homelessness, affordable housing, a new tax regime for homeowners, transit and transportation, election reform, among other issses — failing to generate the interest of Vancouverites, for many (although not VanRamblings) this municipal election cycle has been a bore. Which is a pity, a tragedy.
Salutary news: COPE (the Coalition of Progressive Electors) came out with their platform yesterday, and as platforms go, it was pretty spectacular. But even if COPE Council candidates Tim Louis, Ellen Woodsworth and RJ Aquino are elected to Council, unless at least three candidates from the nascent Neighbourhoods for a Sustainable Vancouver are elected, along with the three COPE candidates, there's not a chance in hell that COPE's progressive platform will be implemented. Still and all, miracles do happen.
At some point over the next week, VanRamblings will announce our endorsements for Vancouver City Council. We think you'll be surprised (maybe stunned) by our choices, which will represent candidates from every party but one. To give you some hint as to which party that might be, check out the video above, a humorous and not entirely inaccurate portrayal of the ineptness that has defined our current City Council.
